36 images rejected by Lucky Oliver! What??

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Today I got an e-mail from Lucky Oliver that all 36 images (all where 3d renderings) I had sent them where rejected. What? All 36 rejected for the same reason!?

They all had the comment “Illustration has rough/ rugged lines” attached to them. Strange, since even iStockphoto has accepted some of them. One of the images has even been given the rating 5 out of 5 from 4 different people on iStockphoto.

Lucky Oliver also mentions a second problem with the images - they don’t know how I have obtained the source model I used or if I have created it myself. I don’t know but I think that may be the real reason for rejecting the whole batch. I just don’t understand why they think that is a problem. Of course I know the rules and I would never use a model that I wasn’t 100% sure I was allowed to use commercially.  Why would I all of a sudden start breaking the rules just because it’s a 3d rendering? If it was a photograph they had not questioned if for example it was really me who had taken the photo - they had just assumed it. Why do they assume I don’t own the rights to the 3d models I use in my 3d renderings?

Well, I guess I wont be sending Lucky Oliver any illustrations for a while. I’ll keep uploading photos to them but it’s not worth the trouble to send any 3d renderings to them. What a shame!

Approved by both 123 Royalty Free and Stockxpert

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Yesterday I learned that I had been approved by both 123 Royalty Free and Stockxpert. All ten photos that I sent to 123 Royalty Free where approved so I submitted another 45. They where all approved! Very nice! I only hope that I can earn some money from them now.

Today I got an e-mail from BigStockPhoto telling me which of my images where approved and which where not. One image got rejected because it didn’t have a signed model release. I was so flattered! It’s a totally computer generated image of a pregnant black woman but apparently it looks very real. That’s probably the best compliment I could ever get. I wish all my computer generated images looked that “real”.

123 Royalty Free has some cool things you can put on your website. One is a “mini slideshow widget” that shows some of your images from your portfolio. The other thing is an image search box that can be modified to show the latest uploads from your portfolio or your most popular images or even both. You can view the mini slideshow widget below…

And the “winner” is…

…Anna! I will join 123 Royalty Free through the link http://www.123rf.com/src_annichen. Thank you to all of you who gave me your links. I will certainly join more microstock agencies in the future and will give you the chance to recruit me again then. It will be interesting to see how it goes with 123 Royalty Free. I will report back what my experience is in the future.

24 hours only! Who wants to recruit me for an almost guaranteed profit?

Friday, March 7th, 2008

I’ve decided that I should join a couple of more microstock agencies to try and increase my earnings. I thought I would give someone the chance to recruit me. Since I hope to make a lot of money in the future that would mean that the person recruiting me would get a part of that income. Of course I can’t guarantee that I will make any money but at least there is a big possibility. The first agency I’m going to join is 123 Royalty Free. The person who recruits me has the possibility to earn this:

If one of my images are sold

You as an affiliate get…

Low Res

$0.10

Medium Res

$0.20

High/Ultra High Res

$0.30

Extended License

$2.00

I will choose one of the affiliate links in the comments to this post after 24 hours have past. After that I will announce the “winner”.

Yippee! I got my first payment ever!

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Yesterday evening I got a message from PayPal that Shutterstock had sent me $194.35. That is the first payment I’ve ever received from any microstock agency. That feels so good! It took me 3 and a half months to earn that sum but I hope it won’t take that long to earn my next payment from them.

Welcome to Microstock Revenue!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Today is the launch of MicrostockRevenue.com! I hope this site will help a lot of talented photographers, illustrators and videographers to realise their dreams about being able to make money with their images.

Maybe you are curious about who I am? Well, my name is Sarah Holmlund and I come from Sweden. I have already started a Swedish version of this site at Bildinkomster.se. So if you are from Sweden I suggest you check it out!

In the beginning of 2007 I got an assignment to review the e-book “The Camera Dollar System”. The book contains information about different ways to make money with a camera. But I especially took a liking of the so called “Microstock Agencies”.  In my assignment to review the book it also included that I should test the concept. Therefore I sent in some of my photos, that I had taken with a digital camera, to two different microstock agencies. Back then I thought these photos where great and I got a bit disappointed when none of them where accepted. Now, a year later, when I know a little bit more about photography I can see that these pictures where really bad. But anyway, I didn’t give up, instead I sent in two other images that I had created much earlier in a 3d program. These where accepted! After doing some research about which type of pictures that sell I created a new image in a 3d program that I sent in. To my great surprise and joy the image where actually bought a couple of times. This made me want more… Imagine sitting in front of the computer all day long and spend all time just creating images. That had been fun!

Unfortunately I don’t have too much time to create pictures but this is something I would like to earn more from in the future. I realise it’s a long way before I will earn any significant money on this but I will keep trying! In the meantime I hope I can inspire other more talented people to get started with this. I know there are a lot of people out there that don’t even know themselves how talented they are. For them this is an excellent opportunity to create an extra income that in the future even may grow to a full time job.

If you enjoy taking photographs, draw, shoot video or create 3d renderings but are unsure if your pictures are good enough I recommend you to give it a try anyway. Send some of your best pictures to two or three different microstock agencies and see what they say. I especially recommend you to start with Lucky Oliver since they are the best when it comes to giving feedback. They don’t just tell you if something is wrong they usually also suggest how you can improve the picture so it will get accepted the next time. It doesn’t cost a thing to try. If the pictures don’t get approved you will learn what is wrong and you can work on improving them. I didn’t get my photos accepted the first time I tried but I never gave up. And I have learnt a lot since I took those first photos which are much thanks to the agencies that was honest and told me exactly what was wrong with them.

So even if I have started this site I’m no professional photographer or illustrator or expert of some kind. I have a small number of images in my portfolio in a number of different microstock agencies and I know that these pictures hardly are any great pictures but I hope to improve. I will try and increase my portfolio and improve the quality of my pictures. After that we will se if I can start to generate some money from all of this.

Do you have any experience from the microstock industry? Please leave your comments here in the blog. It’s always fun to read other peoples success stories but if you have bad experience it’s of course interesting to hear about too.

If you want to follow my journey in to the microstock world I suggest you come back and read my blog often and sign up for my newsletter.

Good luck with your image creations!

Best regards,
Sarah
